The Most Reasonable Person in the Room.

For 24 years as a pediatrician, I believed I had seen every kind of parenting situation. Then one day, a mother brought her 5-year-old son in for a routine checkup and immediately informed me that they practiced gentle parenting. She insisted that I respect his autonomy and avoid correcting his behavior. Within minutes, the little boy began deliberately spitting at me, while his mother smiled and dismissed it as a sign that he liked me.

I stayed calm and politely asked the child to stop. Instead of supporting the request, his mother became furious, accusing me of traumatizing her son. Her outburst was so loud that a nurse opened the door to make sure everything was alright. It was clear that the situation was no longer about the child’s behavior but about the boundaries that had never been taught.

Without raising my voice, I picked up a small mirror from my desk and held it in front of the boy. For the first time, he saw himself in the middle of what he was doing. He froze, stared at his reflection, then looked at his mother and back at me. After a quiet moment, he simply said, “I’m sorry.” His mother’s face went pale as she realized what had happened.

I completed the examination, gave the boy a sticker, and watched him wave goodbye on his way out. His mother remained silent the entire walk to reception. That encounter stayed with me because it taught an important lesson: sometimes children understand right and wrong better than the adults guiding them. All they need is a chance to see themselves clearly.
