THE DAY THEIR EMPIRE COLLAPSED

The next morning, I quietly gathered every document Sofia had saved and took photographs of her injuries. By noon, my lawyer had confirmed what I already suspected: the signatures had been forged, the transfers were illegal, and my mother and brother had left a trail of evidence behind them. For the first time in months, I saw a small spark of hope return to Sofia’s eyes.

Three days later, I invited Mother and Marco to a family dinner. They arrived smiling, convinced they had won. Halfway through the meal, two investigators walked through the front door and placed thick folders on the table. The smiles disappeared instantly as they realized every forged document, bank transfer, and threatening message had been uncovered.

Marco tried blaming Mother. Mother tried blaming Sofia. Neither noticed that nobody was listening anymore. Within weeks, the court froze their accounts, returned our property, and opened a criminal investigation. The luxury lifestyle they had built with stolen money vanished almost overnight.

Six months later, Sofia and I stood on the porch of the home that was finally ours again. As we watched the sunset, my phone buzzed with news that Mother and Marco had lost their final appeal. Sofia squeezed my hand and smiled. They had spent years trying to take everything from us, but in the end, the only thing they succeeded in losing was each other.
