The woman was pointing frantically beneath her seat when the flight attendant hurried over. “My medication!” she cried. A small prescription bottle had rolled underneath Grandma’s seat and was sitting just beyond the woman’s feet. Apparently, during boarding, she had shoved her bag into the space beneath the seat and accidentally kicked the bottle loose. Grandma had spotted it before it disappeared farther down the aisle. The passenger stared at the bottle, then at my grandmother, clearly embarrassed that the woman she had just insulted was the one who had noticed it.

The flight attendant retrieved the medication and handed it back. “You’re very lucky she saw that,” she said. The woman’s attitude disappeared completely. She looked at Grandma for several seconds before quietly saying, “Thank you.” Grandma smiled. “Of course.” Then she added gently, “And perhaps now we can both enjoy the flight.” The woman lowered the armrest, moved completely into her own space, and even apologized for what she had said earlier.

For the rest of the flight, something unexpected happened. The passenger started talking to Grandma. She learned that Rose had spent her entire life working, raising children, and caring for others, but had never once seen the ocean. By the time we landed, they were laughing together like old friends. As we stepped onto the Florida runway, the woman touched Grandma’s arm and said, “I hope you have the most beautiful vacation.”
