His Parents Never Believed He Would Amount To Much, Yet The Boy They Called “Dumb Dog” Eventually Became A Television Icon… See more

Born to Jewish parents who fled Nazi Berlin for New York in 1939, Henry Winkler struggled through a childhood marked by undiagnosed dyslexia. Labeled lazy by teachers and called *Dummer Hund* (“dumb dog”) by his frustrated parents, he survived by leaning heavily on his sharp memory and a natural gift for improvisation.
After 26 college rejections, Winkler auditioned for the Yale School of Drama.

When his mind went blank, he improvised his monologue on the spot and earned admission. He later landed a tiny, six-line role as a mechanic on a new TV show, turning the character into “The Fonz” on *Happy Days* while secretly memorizing every script by ear to hide his condition.
Winkler was 31 before his stepson’s medical diagnosis finally revealed his own condition. He went on to win Emmy Awards and royal honors, but his lasting legacy lies in his bestselling children’s books about dyslexia, written to reassure struggling kids that learning differently never means learning less.
